Brother Printer Test Page

Most Brother machines are toner printers with a single Go key, and almost all of them will print a test page from a button combination with the computer switched off. That combination is recorded below, alongside the MFC menu path and the driver route.

Set scaling to 100%. Choose Actual Size in the print dialog, never Fit to page — scaling distorts every measurement on this sheet. The Download PDF button hands you that same sheet as a ready-made file, so there is no scaling decision to get wrong.

How to print the Brother Printer Test Page

  1. Load plain white paper and set quality to Best or High.
  2. Set scaling to Actual Size or 100% and print this sheet.
  3. Power the printer off, close the front cover, then hold Go as you switch it on.
  4. Keep holding until the Toner, Drum and Error LEDs light, release Go, then press Go once more.
  5. On a machine with a display, also run Menu, then Print Reports, then Test Page.
  6. Judge density and fine lines on this sheet, and take status — toner life and page count — from the Brother report.

Reading the result

The self-test and this sheet both print cleanlyEngine, driver and path are all working. Whatever looks wrong in a document is therefore a setting inside that document rather than the printer.
Solid areas come out faint or greyToner is low or the density setting has been turned down. The Brother report gives remaining life; this sheet tells you whether the reading matches what you can actually see.
Fine lines drop out or breakToner is too thin to hold a narrow stroke, or the drum is worn. Swap the cartridge and reprint the identical sheet before concluding the drum has failed.
Black text has a smear you can rub offThe fuser is not reaching temperature, or the paper is damp. Both faults are independent of the sheet you printed, so check the paper first and the fuser second.
The Go-button combination does nothingThe machine is asleep, the front cover is open, or a toner door is not fully latched. Close everything, wait for Ready, then start the sequence again from a powered-off state.

Also check

  • Black and white page — The natural first sheet on a toner machine, where density and text sharpness matter more than colour channels that are not present.
  • Grayscale test page — Separates a weak cartridge from a weak fuser, since a toner ramp shows the transition a solid block cannot.
  • Laser printer test page — The technology page behind this one: density, registration and fuser faults with no inkjet assumptions mixed in.

Related test pages

  • B&W printer test page — Removing colour from the equation isolates density, toner coverage and fine detail problems.
  • Laser printer test page — Laser faults live in density, fusing and geometry, and none of them involve nozzles. This sheet measures how evenly toner is laid down and whether it stays on the paper.
  • DPI Chart printer test page — Printers advertise one resolution and deliver another. This chart measures what you actually get.

Frequently asked questions

How do I print a test page on a Brother printer without a computer?

Turn the printer off and close the front cover. Press and hold Go as you power on, keep holding until the Toner, Drum and Error LEDs light, release, then press Go once more. On MFC and DCP models with a display, use Menu, then Print Reports, then Test Page instead.

What does the Brother test report show?

Status: toner and drum life, page count, network settings and any active error code. It does not expose image-quality faults such as banding or weak density, which is exactly what the patterned sheet here is for.

Why does the Go button not respond?

The machine is in Sleep mode, the front cover is open, or a toner door is not fully latched. Brother panels give no warning in Sleep, so close everything and wait for Ready before repeating the sequence from a powered-off start.

Where is Print Test Page for Brother in Windows?

Open Devices and Printers, right-click the Brother queue and select Printer properties — not the plain Properties entry, which does not carry the button — then Print Test Page on the General tab.

Can this sheet replace the Brother drum status page?

No. Drum life and page count exist only on the machine’s own report. Print both: one for consumables and print counts, one for the image the machine actually produces.
